What Defines the Kumon English Program?

The Kumon English program sets out to capture snippets of inspiring and interesting literature and collate this content in a highly educational and inspirational way. Our students, in pursuing studies in literature, are setting themselves up to develop a broader general knowledge and a better understanding and perception of the world around them.

It’s easy to discount the importance of literature in our fast-paced modern world. Many parents might come to believe their children to be reading more than they did in their own childhoods – after all, children are always glued to screens.

The reality, however, is that reading a blog post like this one requires a different skill-set to reading a piece of literature.

Reading literature requires patience, perseverance and an open mind. All skills that permit us to share in common experiences and emotions. Reading literature ultimately permits us to understand and relate to our fellow human beings and similarly better appreciate the need to understand history in order to plan for the future. Literature presents new perspectives on issues and similarly allows us to embark on journeys of self-discovery.

The Kumon English program permits students to build foundational skills in reading but also embark on a broader journey of discovery that recognises the importance of literature in developing an appreciation of our role in society. While the world is increasingly defined by its technology – literature carries across any medium and will continue to do so making students engagement with a broad range of literature a central concern.
